A convicted paedophile has denied murdering two nine-year-old ladies, saying he was “bullied” into making a false account by “nasty” police.



Russell Bishop, 52, is on trial for the second time over the deaths of Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway.


The ladies had been sexually assaulted and strangled in a den in Wild Park, Brighton, in October 1986.


Bishop, a former roofer, was cleared of their murders in 1987.


However inside three years he was sentenced to life imprisonment for the kidnap, sexual assault and tried homicide of a seven-year-old woman at Satan’s Dyke on the South Downs.


He was ordered to face trial on the Outdated Bailey for the killings of Nicola and Karen in mild of recent forensic proof linking him to the women.

Giving proof, Bishop stated he feared he could be blamed when he joined the search to seek out the women on 10 October 1986.


He informed jurors: “There was a number of issues that led to that form of considering.

Bishop appeared emotional as he informed jurors he didn’t kill the women and didn’t know who did.

He admitted to seeing the women from a distance in Wild Park on the day of their disappearance, however made a stop-off on the best way house for a “small quantity of hashish”.
