A 90-year-old man who was taken in as a toddler refugee by Clement Attlee after fleeing from the Nazis has met the previous prime minister’s granddaughter for the primary time.



Paul Willer mentioned he and Mr Attlee’s granddaughter Jo Roundell-Greene “hugged many instances” in what was an “overwhelming expertise”.


They met earlier than an occasion in Parliament organised by the Affiliation of Jewish Refugees (AJR) to mark the 80th anniversary of the Kindertransport, which saved 1000’s of youngsters escaping the Nazis.


Mr Willer, who was 10 when he was sheltered by the-then opposition chief in 1939, mentioned “the entire day has been emotional”.

Mrs Roundell-Greene added: “We’re each completely delighted to have met one another. It has been a really special occasion.”


Mr Attlee sponsored Mr Willer, in addition to his brother and mom, so they may transfer to the UK from Germany.


Mr Willer stayed at his dwelling in Stanmore, north west London, for 4 months and felt cherished by the Labour politician, his spouse Violet and their 4 youngsters.

Mr Attlee by no means spoke about this, and the act was revealed publicly by Mr Willer yesterday.


Recalling his fond recollections of Mr Attlee, Mr Willer mentioned: “He was a really mild fatherly determine who exuded goodwill to all us youngsters on a regular basis.”


Mrs Roundell-Greene mentioned: “There was a younger boy who wanted someplace to remain. That they had a giant home and many youngsters, and another was one thing they wished to do.


“They made him welcome. He needed to take chilly baths nevertheless it was simply regular household life. They welcomed him and he mentioned they cherished him.”


Mr Willer couldn’t communicate English and was helped by Mr Attlee’s daughter Felicity to speak with the remainder of the household.


Mrs Roundell-Greene mentioned: “He mentioned he was very keen on my mom Felicity. I really feel an important heat in the direction of him and I had not met him earlier than at this time.”
